In the lesson Importance Of The Aramaic Old Testament, we saw how important the Aramaic Old Testament or Peshitta Tanakh is to an understanding of the Massoretic Text of the Hebrew Tanakh. It is also important to New Testament students who want to understand Yeshua better, and the background and language of the New Testament. Therefore, the Aramaic Old Testament should be used (or at least studied!) by all Bible students.

In addition, in the lesson History Of The Aramaic Old Testament, we saw that the Churches of the East still use the Aramaic Old Testament to this day. This includes the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Syrian Catholic Church, the Assyrian Church of the East, the Ancient Church of the East, the Indian Orthodox Church, the Chaldean Catholic Church, the Maronite Church, the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, the Mar Thoma Church, the Syro-Malabar Church and the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church.

The fact that all these churches (essentially covering all Eastern or Syrian Christian churches spreading east of Israel right the way through to India) still use the same Peshitta Bible, consisting of the Aramaic Old Testament and the Aramaic New Testament, surely must be a fitting testimony to how important the Peshitta and Peshitta Tanakh really are, and at how early a stage they were adopted universally. This in turn witnesses to how early the Aramaic text was fixed.

Aramaic is still spoken today, although its use has declined much. Small villages across the Middle East, in Syria, Iraq and other countries, have tenaciously clung on to their Aramaic language despite the encroachment of Arabic.

One example of a village that still clings to Aramaic, and uses the Aramaic Peshitta for its worship to this day, is Ma'aloula. You can watch a video clip about Ma'aloula from YouTube below.
