History of Aramaic

This series of web pages provides an informative and interesting series of lessons about the history of Aramaic. We cover the early days of Aramaic, and describe how Aramaic quickly spread to cover almost the whole of the Middle East. As well as being a holy language for Jews, Aramaic also became the official language of the Church of the East. Like Hebrew, Aramaic is a truly ancient language, yet it is still spoken today.

Aramaic Alphabet (Square Script)

Aramaic has been written in a number of scripts down through the centuries. Aramaic in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament is written in the Square Script, just like Hebrew in Israel today. The Targums use Square Script, as do Jewish writings such as the Talmud and the Zohar. The Peshitta (Aramaic New Testament) is also available in Square Script. Learn this script if you want to read Biblical Aramaic, the Targums, the Talmud, the Zohar or the Peshitta (Aramaic New Testament). We also have an extensive set of lessons on the Aramaic Vowels which are an essential part of the Aramaic Square Script.

Estrangela Script

Estrangela Script originated in Edessa around the first century C.E. It was adopted by the early Church. The Peshitta (Aramaic New Testament) and Peshitta Tanakh (Aramaic Old Testament) are commonly available in Estrangela script to this day. Learn this script if you want to read editions of the Peshitta or Peshitta Tanakh written in this script.

Serta Script

Serta Script arose in the Western half of the Church of the East several centuries C.E. Like the Estrangela script, it is widely used in written and printed copies of the Peshitta (Aramaic New Testament) and Peshitta Tanakh (Aramaic Old Testament). Learning Serta Script will benefit you if you want to read editions of the Peshitta or Peshitta Tanakh written in this script.

Eastern Script

As the Church of the East continued to spread east, a further script evolved as a variant of the Estrangela Script. Some written and printed copies of the Peshitta (Aramaic New Testament) and Peshitta Tanakh (Aramaic Old Testament) are available in this Eastern Script, making it beneficial to learn.

Remember that Aramaic is very similar to Hebrew, and much of what you learn about Hebrew also applies to Aramaic. Our dedicated site AllThingsHebrew.Com has a whole series of web pages about learning Hebrew and the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) which you may find helpful.

In addition to these lessons on learning Aramaic, we also have a series of pages about Biblical Aramaic, the Targums, the Aramaic Old Testament (Peshitta Tanakh) and the Aramaic New Testament (Peshitta).
