In the lessons on the Aramaic Alphabet and the Summary of the Aramaic Alphabet, we saw that some Aramaic letters have a different form when they occur at the end of an Aramaic word. These are called Final Forms. Five Aramaic letters have final forms.

The following table shows the Aramaic letters which have final forms.

  Kap Meem Noon Pe Sadeh
Ordinary Form Aramaic letter Kap Aramaic letter Meem Aramaic letter Noon Aramaic letter Pe Aramaic letter Sadeh
Final Form Aramaic letter Final Kap Aramaic letter Final Meem Aramaic letter Final Noon Aramaic letter Final Pe Aramaic letter Final Sadeh

Thus, if an Aramaic word ends with one of the above letters, you must use the Final Form and not the ordinary form. The Aramaic letter is still pronounced the same way.

In general, the final forms are longer than the ordinary forms of the Aramaic letters, and they extend below the line.
